New Minimum Wage in Effect

On May 25, 2007, the President signed into law an amendment to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which implemented a three-step process for increasing the federal minimum wage. On July 24, 2007, the federal minimum wage rose to $5.85 per hour; on July 24, 2008, it increases to $6.55 per hour; and on July 24, 2009, it increases to $7.25 per hour. Where federal and state law mandate different minimum-wage rates, the higher standard applies. In states such as Tennessee, which have no state minimum wage, the new federal rate applies.

Every employer with employees subject to the FLSA's minimum wage provisions must post, and keep posted, a notice explaining the Act in each of the employer's establishments in a place where employees can readily read it. The content of the notice is prescribed by the Wage and Hour Division of the Department of Labor.
